San Dimas Canyon Nature Center I love finding FREE activities and FREE admission to hideaway places! I can’t imagine anyone that would pass up something for FREE!! Gas prices are insanely high, and any relief for the pocketbook is appreciated by all! San Dimas Canyon Nature Center is conveniently located steps away from San Dimas Canyon Park.
You can enter the Nature Center from the main parking lot or from a pathway by the bathrooms in San Dimas Canyon Park. If you choose the main parking lot entrance, be prepared for STEEP and UNEVEN stairs. There are hand rails to assist you. When taking the stairs up to the Nature Center you will pass through a gate and enter the open field and camping area near the Nature Center. Continue to the extreme LEFT to find the entrance to the Nature Center. The Nature Center has an open area with enclosed habitats for injured and rescued wildlife. Several birds and smaller animals are housed in these habitats. Once you have completed your self guided tour of the habitats and sanctuaries, you need to continue walking up the slight incline. You will reach the enclosed Nature Center Museum facilities after climbing a few cement stairs.
The Nature Center facility offers many programs throughout the year for tweens and teenagers. Some of the programs offered are a Junior Ranger Program (7-11) or Junior Naturalist Program (12-17). Learn about indigenous wildlife, how to care for them, learn how to lead tours and conduct presentations and assist with programs. It’s a great opportunity for high school students who love protecting wildlife! Another popular program offered during May is the “Natures Child” Program. This annual open house event is two days long and consists of learning about Native American History. Hands on classes in Native American basket weaving, pottery, etc. are offered. Several areas are set aside for booths where food, displays, music and entertainment can be found. All proceeds go to the food and care of animals in the sanctuary.
Campgrounds are available for organized youth groups. Fire pits, BBQ pit cooking area, and amphitheater are a few amenities available. Call to make reservations or for more information 909-599-7512.
Inside of the Nature Center Museum you will find many display exhibits of preserved mammals, birds and insects that live in the area. There are also live reptiles and amphibians for your kids to enjoy! Take a self guided tour and learn about local habitats.

A one mile self guided nature trail is found to the side of the Nature Center and directly above the hilly area of San Dimas Canyon Park. Ask for a plant guide flyer at the Nature Center. You can use it to identify several different plant species growing along the nature trail. The trail is a fairly easy hike, tennis shoes are highly recommended. The trail climbs steadily but not steeply and curves and loops around the foothills inside of the 138 acre park. Nature Center Tips - FREE admission to Nature Center and Habitats
