Laguna Beach is world famous for its art community, artists, and love of art in ALL forms. The Festival of Arts began in 1932 and a year later
the Pageant of the Masters followed. Let’s not forget a few decades later the Sawdust Festival was born to another set of local Laguna Artists.

The Museum found its beginning in Laguna City Hall almost 100 years ago and now resides in a 3 story structure steps away from the beach at Heisler Park. The Museum’s focus is American art, specifically regional and local Californian art. You will find several modern art pieces, art from American tattooists, as well as surf and graffiti influenced art presentations viewed more as “unconventional art.”
Several permanent collections exist at the museum and several older pieces of art are housed on the upper level balcony section of the Museum. This Memorial Collection showcases pieces from local artists dating back to the 19th century.Throughout your tour of the Museum you will find pieces of impressionism, contemporary art work, pop-culture art, and modern pieces of art.
These pieces range from a typical oil painting to sculptures and art made from light or holograms. Other mediums include wood work, graffiti type art, print art and the impressive list goes on and on.
The Laguna Art Museum is a tribute to local and regional artists from different types of cultural backgrounds. This is obvious when you tour each of the 3 levels at this quaint Museum in the heart of Laguna Beach.
Appreciation for the regional artwork is well known as close to 2,000 or more people are members who belong to the Laguna Art Museum.
Through member support, gifts of artwork, and sometimes special grants, the Museum has continued to grow and improve its ability to present world class regional art work for your pleasure and enjoyment. The Laguna Art Museum hosts several exhibitions each year. These 3-4 month exhibitions are theme focused as well as artist focused.
One of the most recent exhibitions, “In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor”, is a testament to the Museum’s commitment to empowering regional artists. This unconventional exhibit provided an opportunity for local artists to display their sometimes unacknowledged and underappreciated pieces of art.
Although this particular exhibit is no longer showing at the Laguna Art Museum, you are strongly encouraged to visit the Museum at least twice a year.
Only then can a person fully appreciate the “local up and coming artists” who are displayed in the current exhibits and permanent collections. You will always see something new and exciting!!
